Reflections on #IdleNoMore by a Chicano de Aztlán

Blessings to All Our Relations ~

As a Chicano AKA Mexican-American of Aztlán, I strongly support the new #IdleNoMore Movement that has spread like a wildfire in Canada and in many spots in the USA. It has already been compared to the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street Movements.

“Idle No More is a co-ordinated, strategic movement, not led by any elected politician, national chief or paid executive director. It is a movement originally led by indigenous women and has been joined by grassroots First Nations leaders, Canadians, and now the world. It originally started as a way to oppose Bill C-45, the omnibus legislation impacting water rights and land rights under the Indian Act; it grew to include all the legislation and the corresponding funding cuts to First Nations political organizations meant to silence our advocacy voice.” ~ Pamela Palmater, #IdleNoMore Indigenous Activist.

We all need to support the Hunger Strike of Attawapiskat Chief Spence and her request to meet with Canada’s Prime Minister or the Governor General of Canada. Let the inflated ego burst. We must be strong in our solidarity.

“Back in 2006, when the Harper government opposed the ratification of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Chief Stewart Phillip, Grand Chief of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, said in an interview, ‘The [Stephen] Harper government has eroded the relationship between First Nations and the federal government. This government is opposed to doing anything associated with collective rights and has favoured individual rights. There has been no consultation with Canada’s aboriginal community.’ “

The Spirit of Global Liberation ~

There is a new Spirit of Global Liberation blossoming in the world that the #IdleNoMore Movement has helped to stimulate ~the conviction that all of us need to be more engaged in the Global Liberation struggles for liberty and justice, not be idle obedient slaves. We need to be busy at work building up our respective liberation movements in a spirit of communal cooperation, not cut-throat competition. We need each other, should study each other’s histories and learn from each other all we can. Keep in mind that if we know everything we can learn nothing.

The #IdleNoMore Movement reminds me of the Immigrant Rights Movement that sprung up for awhile some years back led by Chicano and Mexican immigrant rights advocates. Now many undocuemnted immigrants have faded back into the shadows. There are many peoples hiding in the shadows who need to come out into the light and let their light shine.

Indigenous people are those who are descendants of the original inhabitants of the Americas before the Spanish Conquest and the European Invasion. The killing of Indigenous people in the Western Hemisphere since the beginning of colonization has been estimated at 120 million in the American Holocaust. Keep in mind that Chicanos and Mexicans are also indigenous natives peoples as their roots are native to America.

As Chicanos, some of us refer to ourselves as ‘La Raza Cosmica’ and now the term Latinos is more popular. Our Mother Country was old Mexico. Many Latinos refer to themselves in relation to their country of origin or nationaity, not as a distinct race. Together we make up around 52 million people in the U.S.A. (around 16.7% of the total U.S. population). We are a force to be reckoned with in the world, especially with our bloodties to Mexico, Central America and Latin America.

African-Americans in the U.S.A. make up around 43,8+ milion (14.1% of the US population). The general U.S. population is now around 315+ million, making it the third most populous country in the world.

Clearly on a global level we should see that the so-called Third World is actually the majority of the world’s peoples on Mother Earth. We need to make good connections and wake up to the potential of our sheer numbers!

A Chicano de Aztlán ~

I self-identify as a Chicano de Aztlán of La Raza and am an indigenous native. My bloodline goes back to the Sonoran Yaqui and Chiricahua tribes. I refer to the U.S. southwest as Aztlán ~also called Turtle Island by Native-Americans.

I myself do not self-identify as a Native-American or an American Indian. I do no even consider myself an America, though, I am a U.S. citizen. I usually spell America as ‘Amerika’ with a ‘k’ so we do not forget the role of the KKK in history. I keep in mind that actual Indians are from India. Thus, to by-pass the exclusivity of any self-identity or nationality and in the name of solidarity I consider myself first and foremost a Humane Being of the Family of Humanity.

In all our good works we must pay attention to our basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, medical care and quality education. These are the basics of life. Stick to the basics. Refuse to be divided by ideology or any system of thinking or -isms. We have the same biology. We are an endangered species on a planet in peril.

On an individual level, I need to continue to work with greater discipline on my own spiritual growth and healing after coming up in an insane, inhumane and racist society. At 12-Steps Meetings I coordinate we recite the Serentiy Prayer, a prayer I take to heart. In it we mention having the ‘wisdom to change the things we can’. The change needs to begin within our souls and the change must be one that empowers us as humane beings in the world and supports our natural will to determine our own destiny: self-determination.

A Global Matrix of Movements ~

A genuine global matrix of social movements has come into being because they reflect and resonate with the practical survival needs, deep dreams and high hopes of oppressed peoples worldwide ~the wretched of the earth. All of us who are suffering in a nightmare existence under what is now a global Evil Empire are in ‘this thing of ours’ together. The masses are awakening out of of their deep slumber and are gradually realizing that together they are the true makers of history.

Now we have Internet Power amongst us that helps combat any sense of local isolation, it gives us a sense of connectivity with each other. We need to create Free Internet Access for all, promote global literacy and continue in our efforts at mass education. Our friends must be known by us all and our enemies must be identified. We are many legions.

We know that social movements among the people come and go, some last longer than others, undergo change, morph into other forms and strongly influence other movements. They can be defused by the false promises of fascist co-optation with its toys and trinkets, divided by minor racial-ethnic-tribal differences, sidetracked by the selfish personal agendas of opportunists and led astray by the adventurism of anarchists. We must stay awake!

We need vanguard leadership, structured organization, strong bases of operation and straight members. We need warriors who know that our conscious collective efforts towards Global Liberation ultimately depend upon the capacity of a Global People’s Liberation Movement to mobilzie the masses of people worldwide.

We live in connected reality ~all our realities are connected and interconnected at one level or another. Strive to live in harmony with all our relations. Know yourself! Come together! Get busy! #IdleNoMore

“And I would like to say that according to the Mayan calendar the 21 of December is the end of the non-time and the beginning of time. It is the end of the Macha and the beginning of the Pacha, the end of selfishness and the beginning of brotherhood, it is the end of individualism and the beginning of collectivism – 21 of December this year.

The scientists know very well that this marks the end of an anthropocentric life and the beginning of a bio-centric life. It is the end of hatred and the beginning of love, the end of lies and beginning of truth. It is the end of sadness and the beginning of happiness, it is the end of division and the beginning of unity, and this is a theme to be developed. That is why we invite all of you, those of you who bet on mankind, we invite those who want to share their experiences for the benefit of mankind.”
From Transcript of Evo Morales Ayma, President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, at the General Assembly of the United Nations on September 26, 2012.
